DJ Producer Matt Darey is one of the UK’s Dance music National treasures and a EDM pioneer so it is no surprise that his club project “Matt Darey presents Nocturnal” is getting massive support. So the VMM is delighted to Interview Matt Darey about his forthcoming Matt Darey presents Nocturnal Album Party and find out all about the party night which will be at the UK Club The Whitehouse London this JULY 2010.
The Interview:
Hi Matt we hope your well and looking forward to the Matt Darey presents Nocturnal album Party club night.
Q: So please tell the VMM all about the Matt Darey presents Nocturnal club night and where you have already taken the night across the globe and more about the night here in the UK?
A: I guess I’ve been building up the Nocturnal concept for about 5 years now but in particular the last few years its really blossomed. Nocturnal parties across the USA are now really well established, Russia is one of the next biggest homes for Nocturnal. In both countries Nocturnal Radio is broadcast Nationally which helps people get into the sound. I’ve also taken the Nocturnal parties to pretty much every country in the world this last 2 years, china, Australia, All over Europe, South and central America. Again, Nocturnal Radio is broadcast in all these countries. A typical Nocturnal night features electro, progressive house and some trance too. Its not every often I play in the UK cause I love to spend most of my time travelling round the world. Kinda makes it that little bit more special when I do.
Q: Matt what made you choose The Whitehouse London for this Matt Darey presents Nocturnal Album Party and will you be taking the brand to other destinations around the globe this year?
A: I chose The White house for the Nocturnal album event cause it’s a nicely decked out intimate club, It’s a cool crowd, DJ’s like Robbie Rivera, Seb Fontaine, Faithless, Freemasons all play there so they love there Groovin beats.
Q: The VMM would like to ask do you plan your playlist in a club or feel the crowd?
A: Its a mixture, you have to make some plans to start with , I look for groups f tracks that fit together perfectly. You have to react to what the crowd is into to get a good atmosphere but theres nothing wrong with pushing the envalope and trying new styles on them. I play so many different genres it would be boring for me to play the same style all the time. I take about 200 of my favourite tracks along where ever I go and depending on the crowd I play more trancey, house, electro.
Q: Can you tell the VMM who will be joining you Matt what’s the DJ line up for your forthcoming Matt Darey presents Nocturnal Album Party at the Whitehouse London Friday 30th JULY?
A: There actually about 4 local DJ’s playing before and after my set, they play the prog house & Electro grooves. You can get a full listing here: http://www.thewhitehouselondon.co.uk/listings/
Q: So to go back to the beginning Matt and can you tell the VMM how did you begin to be a DJ? And can you describe to us your first experience as a DJ?
A: I never wanted to be a DJ. I was making Dance music for almost 10 years. It was the end of 2001, the last 2 years had been really good for me having had about 16 of my productions and remixes reach the top 20 in the UK National chart. I mixed a few compilation albums called Euphoria in my studio in London and they did pretty good too, hitting top 10 in the album charts. Guess that paved the way for my first gig in public. I was persuaded to play at one of my producer friends birthday party just for laughs (Steve Jones from the Space Brothers / Chakra & now Co Owner of Audio Jelly the download shop). He came round to my house gave me a crash course in Djing the afternoon of the party so it was in at the deep end never having played in public before. Anyway, didn’t think too much about it, was just for fun really….that was until myself and some friends were driving to the party listening to our national BBC Radio 1 when we heard an announcement from Pete Tong…Matt Darey plays his debut DJ set tonight at Blah Blah Blah. I turned around to my mates and said, No F**king way!!! Then the pressure was on cause I knew there would be press there…….a little bit pissed off thinking it was only gonna be a friends kinda party, turned out was a full house of people..ouch!!. Well I held it together pretty well considering, only one train wreck. Anyway, I guess it gave me a kick up the ass and 6 weeks later I was playing my first “Official” gig at NYE in KL. That went like a dream having done more than an hours practice:) I played for 4 hours till I ran out of music. I was kinda hooked from then on but never wanted it to be a job. It was always just the occasional gig over the next few year, just to travel and have a bit of adventure.
Q: Matt do you believe that a DJ needs some sort of musical education to DJ like play the piano, guitar or read?
A: Not really, Most people I know who DJ & produce have no formal education in music. I came from a very musical background and had some classical training. I think for EDM, the most important thing is to have a creative mind and be computer literate.
Q: Matt you have a world known Radio show called the Nocturnal Radio so where can we listen to the show?
A: Most peeps just download it at the website http://www.mattdarey.com/v3/nocturnal.html there’s 2 shows a week playing all new releases from the electronic scene.
Q: Matt with all your studio commitments and dj commitments around the globe how do you have the time to run a Nocturnal night what compels you to work so hard?
A: I just love what I do, love making music and love to party hard.
Q: Can you tell the VMM what kind of music have you been making recently Matt?
A: My style falls somewhere between prog house and trance, groovin with vocals and big breakdowns. So far this year I released 3 singles, check them out here http://www.youtube.com/dareyproducts
Q: Can you tell the VMM Matt why do you like to change your style of music so much?
A: I changed style so many times just to keep things interesting for me. I started off as a singer in a guitar band, then started making drum & base, then house, then Trance, then house, then Garage, then Techno, then Trance ……A few years ago I started an Electronic & guitar band hybrid called Urban Astronauts www.myspace.com/urbanastronautsuk which has since been remixed into clubland
Q: So back to your Nocturnal album party, can you tell the VMM what sort of club atmosphere are you looking to capture for this party that’s different from others out there?
A: It’s a cooler sound with grooving beats but with a lot of energy in the room cause I love a big breakdown that kicks ass when the beats come in, very different from say a night at the Gallery where its all banging hard trance pretty much. Expect a bit of glam and a sexy more mature crowd.
Q: Finally Matt where can the UK Clubbers best buy tickets for your forthcoming Matt Darey presents Nocturnal Album Party night at the Whitehouse London Friday 30th JULY?
Thanks for the interview Matt and the VMM team wish you success for the forthcoming Matt Darey presents Nocturnal Album Party, on Friday 30th JULY 2010 at The Whitehouse London.
