The VMM is very excited to welcome Annabelle Newman, who has agreed to take some time out of to her busy schedule to help and advise VMM readers involved in the dance industry. Annabelle is a lawyer with a wealth of knowledge of the pitfalls and myths of the music industry. We want to bring to you thorough the VMM some help via the “VMM MUSIC LEGAL SURGERY!” Which is open for “you each month” to send in your questions if you have any queries to ask about publishing copyrights, not being paid for a dj gig, record contracts and anything else musically related that you need legal advice on for free!.
Its important to note that not all your questions & quires can be answered in some cases you may need a full legal consultaion but Annabelle will do her best to help and advise where possible. About Annabelle Newman- LAWYER
From the age of 7, Annabelle’s early love for the Music Business was very clear and the decision was made to make it her life. Annabel le was lucky enough to be brought up in a very musically diverse family and began in the industry by the age of 16 working with her brothers International Hard Dance Act Lab4,sending out demos for them and contacting promoters. Having studied Philosophy, Psychology and Business at school, Annabelle then started her degree in Music Industry Management when she was 19. During the first year she carried out work experience for Torture Garden doing the licensing for their compilations Annabelle then went on to do work experience at Truelove/Stay Up Forever, as well as Sherlock Holmes Publishing and Elementary Records.
By her 2nd year she had set up her own label in 1998 called One Inch Records known for it’s diverse and against the grain releases, predominantly for Lab4 releases and her own productions as by this time Annabelle was also a well established producer under the name The Fallen Angel releasing co-writes ‘I See you in my Dreams’ with her brother, Adam Lab4; which went on to be a huge anthem worldwide and had releases on One Inch Records, Mohawk, Stimulant Records, Phantom Records etc with further big anthems such as ‘No Love’ with Nazareth, ‘One Inch Deeper’ with Rowland the Bastard, Brainstorm and Retribution with Titchy Bitch, the latter of which reached the UK charts!
By 2000 Annabelle started to work with the International artist Yoji (formerly Yoji Biomehanika) At this point she focussed on managing Yoji’s UK career booking and managing all tours. In 2004 Annabelle went back to university for a further 4 years to study to further degrees both in Law, while still being involved pervasively in the music industry. Annabelle then spent 3 years working in private practice and in house legal teams of Multinational companies.
Now Annabel le has completed her studies in law and is practicing Law full time as well as co-managing a Rock band. Her aim with law is to help put some of the wrong things right that she has seen over the years within the music industry and to help bring the industry up to a more professional level! Due to the experience gained as an artist, a label owner and a manager, coupled with her legal education it provides Annabelle with an understanding and depth of both the industry and Law to enable her to understand her client’s needs and to resolve their issues. Some of Annabelle’s dance music clients include: Yoji, Lab4, Roger Shah, Riot Recordings, Brisk & Ham (Next Generation Records), Alex Kidd (Kiddfectious), Mark EG, Core Magazine and Most Wanted Management to name a few.
