Cypher PR – VMM The Industry

VMM The Industry – Cypher PR  Interview
Who are the people and companies behind some of the world’s top DJ’s , Artists and Events.  The VMM takes a look over the coming year to find out more about the some of the world’s top dj management, booking agents and PR companies in this special feature called “The Industry”. This month we speak too the UK promotional company called Cypher PR.

Q: Can you tell the VMM a little history about Cypher PR?
CYPHER: Cypher was formed in the good ol’ days of the music industry when artists actually made money from selling their music and a label could expect to sell thousands of vinyls and CDs. When the bubble burst Cypher diversified into events and digital marketing since then we’ve gone onto promote some of the world’s biggest festivals, regularly host events for clients as well as developing our own brands and also become one of the leading specialist digital PR companies in the UK (well we like to think so!)
Q: Can you tell the VMM what you love about the music business?
CYPHER: Late nights and generally having a lot of fun! Seriously though, the music business gives us all the opportunity to work within a field we are all passionate about.
Q: Is there any advice you can give about putting together a good press release, what should it contain and how important is it to have a good press release?
CYPHER: Do you mean press release? If so a press release outlines and highlights what it is you are trying to promote and it is important that it is presented in a clear and engaging manner, always try to get your key message across in the opening paragraph in case someone is skim-reading.  A good press release makes the difference between someone stopping and reading about your product or what you are promoting and simply placing it in the bin and moving onto one that is exciting.
Q: Can you tell the VMM how best can an artist write there biography do you have any tips to writing the perfect biog?
CYPHER: Depending on your budget I’d always suggest getting a journalist to write your biography for you.  They are well versed in interviewing people and writing engaging pieces (if they are any good that is!) If you don’t have the budget then as with your press release make sure it is clear and to the point. Always try to summarise yourself in the opening paragraph also and never make it more that one page.
Q: Do you think it is important to be part of the online social networks and why?
CYPHER: Immensely. Social Media has created an opportunity to you to communicate directly to your fan base and also gives tangible results where you can measure the success or your support whilst getting instant feedback from your fans. Without engaging social media you are simply missing out.
Q: What do you think are the best social network websites sites out there today and that an artist should make sure they are part of?
CYPHER: Facebook, Soundcloud, iLike, Fairtilizer, Bandcamp, Twitter, Youtube, Vimeo, Last.fm are just the starters really!
Q: Can you give any advice in promotional tips for DJ’s & Artists to get themselves noticed?
CYPHER: Ensure you present yourself in a professional manner and you will be taken seriously. Make sure you get out meet people in person, contact via email and social media will only get you so far, you can’t beat that personal touch.

The VMM thanks Cypher PR team for taking the time out to be part of this special feature “The Industry” and we hope the information above will help you develop good promotional skills for the future.
